Most people associate astronomy with pretty pictures in popular science magazines and books, and astronomers are traditionally pictured as concentrated men in white coats staring through huge telescopes all night long. But, in 2009, astronomers finally decided to tell the world who they are, what they really do and why it is necessary. So, exactly four hundred years ago, one evening, in 1609, Galileo Galilei sent a strange device made by him into the sky, which was a long pipe with lenses inserted into it. So, the great Italian scientist opened the era of telescopic astronomy.
